Celebrate the life and legacy of the Turney Family with the new installation of our Historical Marker.

On November 16th, 2024 the Texas Historical Commission recognized the Turney’s as a significant part of Texas history by awarding it an Official Texas Historical Marker. The designation honors William Ward Turney and his wife, Iva Guthrie Turney as an important and educational part of local history.

A big thank you for those who showed up for this historic event! And a special thank you to Senator Cesar Blanco, Along with Former IMoA Board President Mary Jo Melby, Dr. Cynthia Renteria, Barbara Ann Welch, The Historic Commission of El Paso County, El Paso County, Texas Historical Commission, and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

About our museum

The International Museum of Art, a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization, is located in the heart of El Paso’s historic Rio Grande District. The building, a Victorian-style mansion designed by architect Henry C. Trost, was owned by State Senator William Turney and his wife Iva, a prominent El Paso family who resided in the home from 1909 to 1939. Following Senator Turney’s death, Mrs. Turney donated the property to the City of El Paso. Honoring the wishes of the Senator and Mrs. Turney – that their former home always be used for the arts- the Turney mansion became the home of the International Museum of Art.
