“Photo Chemistry”— the Photo Art of R. L. Palmer

October 1–28, 2023: The IMoA will feature the digital images of biographer, poet, and photo artist, R. L. Palmer. Palmer has pursued his photographic interests for more than six decades, amassing a vast collection of photographs that are highly varied in both subject and style.

Reception: The public is invited to a casual opening reception on Sunday, October 1, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. There will be a “door prize” consisting of a credit worth $125 toward the purchase of any picture in the exhibit.

He refers to his craft as “photoart.” In his words: “To me, photoart is an art form in which the photographer, the camera, and the computer work together to create images that are more than the simple, imperfect rendering of reality through an impartial lens. I try to add a layer of interest, emotion, energy, etc., that the mere ‘snapshot’ often loses during the journey of the visual image from reality to its printed representation on paper. The computer is my darkroom.”

Palmer’s “Photo-Chemistry” exhibit will feature over 270 framed pictures—including images from Alaska, Canada, Hawaii, Malaysia, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand, and the U.S., the latter including El Paso and the Southwest.

About the artist: Raised in Pennsylvania and New York, Palmer served four years with the U.S. Air Force Security Service and later received a Ph.D. degree in educational psychology from The University of Texas at Austin. After 20 years with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (U.S. Department of Defense), he retired in 1995 as a Senior Research Psychologist.
